The study app
Read the chapter once. Revise it all term.
Caalim turns a chapter into a summary and a set of revision cards, and holds the homework your school sets alongside them. Every new account starts with 15 coins, and anything a teacher assigns costs none of them.
Android in Somaliland and Somalia today. More regions and an iPhone version are in development.

What it does
Built around the chapter you are on
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, English and Arabic, filed by grade so what you open matches the syllabus you are sitting.
Lesson Summarizer
Point it at a chapter and it comes back with the objectives and the points worth knowing, in the order the book teaches them.
Revision Helper
The same chapter as question-and-answer cards you can work through on the bus, one at a time, with the answer hidden until you want it.
Homework from school
Whatever your teacher sets arrives grouped by subject, with the due date and a running count of what is new, started, done and marked.
Marking and feedback
Written answers get read, not only ticked. Each one comes back beside the correct answer with a short note on where the gap was.
Subject library
Chapters and lessons filed by subject and grade, so what you open matches the syllabus you are actually sitting.
School tab
Link the account your school registered and a School tab appears, carrying set work, results and progress across the term.
Study tools
Two tools, pointed at any chapter
These work whether or not your school is involved. Choose a subject, choose a chapter, and the app does the rest.
Lesson Summarizer
A long chapter comes back as its objectives and the points that carry them, written in the language of the book rather than a paraphrase of it. It is the version to read on the morning of a test, when there is no time for twenty pages.
- Objectives first, then the ideas under each one
- Sections you can fold away as you finish with them
- The same chapter your class is being taught from

Revision Helper
The chapter again, this time as questions. Each answer stays hidden until you ask for it, so you find out what you actually know instead of what looks familiar.
- Numbered question cards drawn from the chapter
- Answers folded away until you want them
- Short enough to work through between classes

Schoolwork
When your school runs Layli
Layli is the platform your teachers plan and mark in. Link the account your school registered and a School tab appears in Caalim, carrying set work, results and how you are doing across the term.
Your teacher sets it
Homework is built in Layli from the chapter the class has just been taught, so the questions follow the pages rather than a generic bank.
It appears in your School tab
Grouped by subject, with the pages it covers, the grade it is for and the time it is due. Four counters tell you what is new, started, finished and marked.
You answer, and it comes back marked
Written answers are read and compared with the correct one. Your teacher reviews the marking before it counts, so a wrong call gets caught.

Coins
What costs coins, and what does not
The app is free to download and every new account starts with 15 coins. Coins pay for the study tools when you point them at material you chose yourself. Everything a teacher sets through Layli sits outside that, free to a pupil for as long as their school is running it.
No coins needed
Homework, summaries and revision assigned by a teacher. The marking and the feedback on whatever you submit. The whole School tab, including your results.
Spends coins
Summarising or revising material you chose yourself, and asking about a question you brought. The app shows the cost before you confirm. Top up inside the app with Waafi or eDahab. Terms of service apply.
- 15 coins are credited when the account is created
- No bank card at any point, and no subscription; top-ups are mobile money
- Coins carry no cash value and are not transferable between accounts
Questions about Caalim
What does Caalim cost?
The app is free to download, and every new account starts with 15 coins. After that, the study tools you point at material of your own run on coins, topped up in the app with Waafi or eDahab. Work that a school assigns through Layli costs no coins at all, however much of it there is. The terms of service apply.
What are coins actually spent on?
Summarising or revising something you chose yourself, and asking for help with a question you brought. The app shows what an action costs before you confirm it. Homework, summaries and revision set by your teacher, along with the marking that comes back, are outside the coin system.
Do I need a school account?
No. Anyone can download Caalim and use the study tools straight away. If your school runs Layli, linking your account adds the School tab, which is where set work, marks and progress appear.
How do I sign up?
With your mobile number. It is verified once, and that is your account. There is no separate password to forget, and a pupil whose school has registered them signs in with the same number the school holds.
Where is Caalim available?
Somaliland and Somalia today, on Android. Other regions are planned, and an iPhone version is in development. If you are somewhere we have not reached, write to hello@caalimapp.com and we will tell you when that changes.
Which subjects does it cover?
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, English and Arabic, organised by grade so the chapters match the syllabus you are sitting.
How does the marking work?
Multiple-choice answers are checked against the key. Written answers are read by the model, compared with the correct answer, and returned with a short note on what was missing. Where a school is involved, a teacher reviews the marks before they are final.
How does my school get set up?
Schools use Layli, the platform their teachers plan and mark in. Once a school is on it, everything its teachers assign reaches pupils in Caalim without anyone doing anything else. Book a demo at https://layli.me.
